Tips on Leash Training your Dog
Article written by Nancy Settecasi
Establishing a routine is the most important factor in leash training your puppy. When first starting to train your pup, devoting time is important. It is a good idea to take him out for a walk every hour or two. You should also take your dog out after feedings, naps and playing.
When leash training, keeping a feeding schedule makes bowel movements more predictable. When taking your doggie for a walk, be sure to take some treats with you in order to praise him immediately afterwards and offer him a treat. Positive reinforcement is key in leash training. It is also a good idea to establish a command while he is performing the action, such as “"go poop".”
If you have found that your dog has relieved himself in the house, never reprimand him after the fact. This is ineffective and will only scare him. Also, never rub his face in it. He doesn't know that HE was the one who pooped there. If you DO catch him in the act, create a distraction such as a loud noise, which should stop him in the act, and bring him outside immediately in order to finish the job and top off with praise and a treat. If you are unable to do this, then a firm toned "No! Bad Dog " should suffice. Leash training requires timing and patience.
Keep in mind that during leash training, the time your dog spends indoors should be supervised constantly. At times when you are unable to supervise him, he should be confined to a crate or a small gated area which holds his bed, food and water bowls and space to move around. If you will be leaving him for more than 3 hours, then he should be provided with an area to relieve himself (such as a litter box, wee-wee pad or newspaper). Puppies can't really hold it longer than that.
Leash training is a good idea for dog owners who can take the time out of their schedule to walk the dog. If time just doesn't allow, then you may want to consider using the Wiz Dog mat. This is a great alternative to housetraining your dog. It is easy to clean, easy to use and best of all, no dog paws tracked around the house. It comes in different sizes which can accommodate almost any breed.
The choice is yours. Of course, if you are able to take your dog outdoors, leash training is also good for your dog's health. A brisk walk in the fresh air will always do a dog good.
