How to Care for Dog Teeth

Article written by Nancy Settecasi

Dental hygiene is very important for dog teeth. Like humans, dogs are also susceptible to gingivitis, as well as other types of gum diseases. They can also have bad breath. This can be easily avoided by brushing your dog's teeth on a weekly basis, or whenever you give him a bath. It's a good idea to start when he is a puppy in order to get him accustomed to it. Of course you can start brushing at any age. It is best to use a finger cot which enables you to reach back teeth and is easier to maneuver. If there is a chance that your dog may bite you, it is better to use a toothbrush. Try to get him accustomed to the taste before putting the toothpaste in their mouth. Have him lick some of the toothpaste off your finger.

Besides mint, dog toothpastes come in other types of flavors, such as beef and chicken. Experiment to see which is your dog's favorite. This will make life easier for both of you. If your dog tries to chew on the toothbrush, it's o.k. to let him do it while you work the brush around your dog's teeth.

If your dog is much too difficult to handle, then you are better off asking your vet to provide dental care for your dog's teeth.
